Greetings All Arcviewers, My most humble apologies for being so late in posting a SUM - I never forgot you! Thank you to all those who offered suggestions, including: Chris Gerecke, Anita, Kendis Willet, Yew Yuan, Kathi Hannaford, Jose Luis Portillo, Peter Taylor, Eric Nischan, Scott Web, Michael Schnirch, and Nicolo Pitsch. I hope I got everyone - if I missed you I am sorry and I thank you also. The most popular suggestion regarding the calculation of distance along a river channel involved the xtools extension. I downloaded this extension from the esri arcscripts webpage and it worked beautifully! In order to calculate the distance from point A to point B I needed to create a new line theme and draw it manually down the middle of the river. Afterward, I clicked on the "calculate area, perimeter, length, acres, hectares" function and the length of the line popped up in the attribute table. There were some other very good suggestions, however, I am new with ArcView and I felt that this extension was the most uncomplicated solution to my problem. Regarding the calculation of slope along the channel, here are some suggestions. Kathi suggested that I need to "pick out (estimate) the elevation at the top of the channel and at the bottom of the channel and then subtract and divide by the summed length from above." Also, Kendis suggested two extensions: "getgridvalue21" and the "polytpts" extension both found at the esri arcscripts webpage. Kendis said to make the desired points with the polytpts extension and then use the getgridvalue to extract the heights for each point. Then, manually go in and create a new field in the line theme and use the elevations and lengths to get slope. Thanks again for your help. Cheers, Andrew Carnegie
